Class Description

This course provides basic instruction on how to use Microsoft Excel for Narcotic Investigations. Upon completion of this course, students will be able to understand how to navigate and manipulate the tools and functions of Excel; create and update basic electronic spreadsheets, workbooks, use formulas and functions for completing calculations (e.g. dates, times, account information, phone numbers); format worksheets, produce charts, and use Excel tables; perform searches on entire database. Students will learn excel techniques to conduct communication analysis with phone toll data, assisting narcotics investigations in dismantling drug distribution communication networks. Excel software will be utilized to organize and identify financial and commodity flow analysis with a fundamental focus on following the money associated with the profits of illegal narcotics sales.

Students will learn how to create pivot tables and summary reporting of bulk data related to narcotics investigations. At the end of this course students will be able to better assist narcotics investigations by applying commonly accessible software, Microsoft Excel, to large data sets requiring analysis to identify illicit money movement, drug sales and target communications.
